Third Prize | Innovation for Air Quality Improvement in Kabul, Afghanistan

In 2023, Daira Sabz was honored with the ICIMOD Clean Air Prize for our pioneering work in tackling urban air pollution in Kabul. This prestigious recognition celebrates our practical innovation in clean air technology and reinforces our leadership in environmental consulting and sustainability.

🌬️ Our Awarded Project: Reducing Emissions from Urban Heating

Our initiative addressed the widespread use of coal for heating and cooking in apartment buildings—a major contributor to fine particulate pollution in Kabul. The project involved:

Designing and piloting emission-reducing filters on heating systems
Implementation in seven large residential buildings
Direct benefit to over 780 residents through improved indoor and outdoor air quality
Technology developed with a cost-efficient model: USD 2,000–3,500 per unit
Potential for scalable, low-cost solutions to improve air quality in urban environments

This innovation aligns with our mission to develop climate-smart, community-based, and cost-effective solutions that address critical environmental challenges in developing cities.
