Biodiversity baseline and impact assessment for SMEC International along the 95 km Salang Corridor between Jabal-os-Siraj and Khinjan, Afghanistan.
SMEC contracted Daira Sabz to undertake flora and fauna studies for the proposed upgrading of the Salang Corridor, part of CAREC Corridors 5 and 6. The assignment covered the existing 95 km route between Jabal-os-Siraj and Khinjan.
The study identified ecological features within the project’s area of influence, assessed potential effects on flora and fauna, and developed mitigation recommendations. Fieldwork combined vegetation and wildlife observations, camera trapping and consultation with local communities.
The survey connected field observations and local knowledge with the ecological questions raised by the proposed road upgrade.
Survey of vegetation and ecological features along the corridor to inform the biodiversity baseline.
Terrestrial fauna and bird observations, supported by wildlife camera traps and photographic documentation.
Aquatic-fauna observations and field documentation formed part of the ecological survey work.
Discussions with local people contributed knowledge about the corridor and its biodiversity.
Assessment of potential project effects on flora and fauna and recommendations to reduce adverse impacts.
Daira Sabz used a practical and standards-based delivery approach:
Observe vegetation, wildlife and habitats within the study area.
Record field observations, camera-trap material and photographic evidence.
Gather local perspectives alongside the ecological fieldwork.
Use the baseline to assess potential impacts and develop mitigation recommendations.
The Salang Corridor connects northern and southern Afghanistan across the Hindu Kush. Ecological baseline information helps project teams understand biodiversity considerations before decisions are made about road upgrading.
Photographs supplied for the Salang assignment: mountain landscapes, flora and fauna, camera traps, aquatic fieldwork and community discussions.
